Hot Springs in Japan?

Hey soakers,
My pal and I were just watching some anime where the folks were going to some hot springs in Japan. We've wanted to vivsit Japan for awhile and this seems like a great way to focus the trip but we know nothing about them over there. Any body here have any info or know of a good book/guide to Japaneese springs?

Went last weekend. It's always great. The pools are clean and there are many to choose from. Good spa services and yummy massages too. The deli on the premises is very good for lunch and snacks, but the restaurant on the property is pretty fabulous for dinner. The shrimp scampi was so good and their signature apple tart was to die for.
The only caveat was the too small/cramped womens locker room--but the saunas-wet and dry make up for it!
